Thoroughbred
The glamour girls of the Canadian breeding industry – Natalma, Lady Angela, No Class, Fanfreluche, Square Angel and Flaming Page – are honored residents of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. So move over ladies for another broodmare with a resume equally as impressive – Cool Mood, a stakes winning daughter of Northern Dancer.
As a racehorse, the chestnut filly won the most important race for her gender, the Canadian Oaks in 1969. She also won the Kirkland Stakes at old Blue Bonnets in Montreal and was stakes placed in the Duchess and Tattling Stakes. While her race record (eight wins in 41 starts) wasn’t that impressive, her legacy is was what she produced, and what her daughters and grand-daughters produced.
Here’s a sample of Hall of Fame horses that carry Cool Mood’s blood:
1989 Triple Crown winner With Approval
He was out of Cool Mood’s daughter Passing Mood (by Buckpasser). She was Broodmare of the year in 1989 and was the also the dam of stakes winners Sweeping Change, Bar U Mood and Daijin, who is the dam of stakes winner Handpainted. With Approval was a multiple graded stakes winner in the U.S., and set a world record on the turf at Belmont in the Bowling Green and a track record time in the Tidal Stakes.
1990 Triple Crown winner Izvestia
He was out of Cool Mood’s daughter Shy Spirit. She was later honored as Broodmare of the Year. Shy Spirit produced stakes winners Key Spirit, Introspective, Unduplicated and stakes placed Playful Spirit. Izvestia, by Escapade, also won the Molson Export Million and was a graded stakes winner also in the U.S.
1997 Belmont Stakes winner Touch Gold.
He was another of Passing Mood’s sons. Touch Gold also won the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational at Monmouth, N.J., and the Grade 2 Lexington Stakes at Santa Anita.
Cool Mood was bred by H.A. Love and owned and raced by D.G. (Bud) Willmot’s Kinghaven Farms of King City, ON. She was trained by John Russell. Johnny Sellers was in the saddle the day she won the Oaks at Woodbine.
Cool Mood’s daughters were simply magnificent. In short, five of her nine daughters produced 12 stakes winners, two of which won the Canadian Triple Crown and a third the Belmont Stakes. Cool Mood’s other daughters to produce stakes winners are: Greenaway, Moody Maiden and Princess Laika.
